Daisy Fuentes In Full Bloom

by Gerri Miller • photography by Mark Anderson

“I get offers from Playboy continuously but that’s not for me.”

Ten years since she graced the very first cover of Estylo, Daisy Fuentes is happy, healthy and looking better than ever at 40. She’s balancing her career as a TV host and designer with a fulfilling relationship (with British singer Matt Goss) and an active lifestyle. And she’s doing it all with gusto! We caught up with her while she got ready to face the camera for this tenth anniversary issue’s cover photo shoot.

Estylo: Rewind to 1997: Where were you 10 years ago?
Daisy: Career-wise, I was getting out of MTV and getting into America’s Funniest Videos. Personally, I was at a turning point, a real crossroads, going through some hard times. I was just starting to find myself and I was still letting a lot of outside things affect me. I was still listening to a lot of opinions and I was insecure and it wasn’t always positive. And in my personal life I was at a place where I think most women are at 30, trying to find what I wanted and what I didn’t.

Estylo: How do you see the past decade?
Daisy: I never in a million years thought that I would have my own clothing line in 900 stores all over the country. I never thought I would even be on TV. I was very focused on the moment and I still am. But I remember thinking I was so grateful for the things that I had gotten the chance to do that even if it all ended I’d still done more than I’d ever dreamed. That’s kind of how I feel now. So don’t limit your dreams because the opportunities are endless.

Estylo: What’s your plan for the next 10 years?
Daisy: I’ve had the chance to do so many fun things, like travel the world with MTV Internacional and host the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo. But I’d like to do something that makes a difference in people’s lives. I don’t know exactly what that will be, but it will make sense when the time is right.
I definitely want to continue with television. MTV offered me a development deal as a producer, for whatever I have in mind. And I’m going to start production on a syndicated show called EcoDome. It’s home makeovers on celebrity homes but it’s all going to be ecologically correct. We’re going to make people’s homes green and energy efficient and teach how you can do the same in your house, from simple things like changing a light bulb to tearing down walls. It will be very informational.

Estylo: Is your house in the makeover mix?
Daisy: I would definitely like to do some in my house but it’s more interesting if I can get into Ricky Martin’s house! I have a list of my friends that I’d like to approach.

Estylo: Let’s talk fashion for spring and summer. What are the trends and must-haves?
Daisy: The all-white look is great. Crisp white shorts or white denim with a sheer, flow-y white top and white sandals, or navy blue with white polka dots, or stripes. The nautical theme is very important. Bags, the big satchels are still hot. But I think it’s good to invest in a nice clutch, maybe in a metallic like bronze that can go with everything.

Estylo: What will we see in your fall line for Kohl’s?
Daisy: A lot of comfy oversized sweaters—grays, blacks, charcoals—and classic wrap dresses. Invest in a long coat with a belt that can last you a few seasons and a great pair of boots that will dress up jeans and a tee shirt.
