Vantage Point
An already controversial undertaking, this political thriller presents five different points-of-view as it chronicles an attempt on the life of the President of the United States, with each of the stories told in individual 15-minute segments. Starring Dennis Quaid, Forest Whitaker, Matthew Fox, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana (more on her below) and Edgar Ramirez, one of Venezuela’s most popular film stars (ditto). Coming February 22 from Columbia Pictures.

Definitely Maybe
Ryan Reynolds plays a father who’s forced to explore and reconsider the relationships of his past when he explains his impending divorce to his young daughter, played by Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin. Already pegged the “date movie of the year” (and its Valentine’s Day opening should only help), the romantic comedy costars Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher, Nestor Serrano, Cheryl Cosenza and Jaime Tirelli. Coming February 14 from Universal Pictures.

The Accidental Husband
Uma Thurman stars as a talk radio host who advises one of her Latina listeners to break up with her boyfriend, after which the jilted suitor seeks revenge. Directed by Griffin Dunne, the plot sounds like a thriller…but it’s actually being described as a “romantic comedy.” Justina Machado, who is best remembered as Vanessa Diaz in the TV series Six Feet Under, is debuting in a starring role for this feature. Coming February 8 from Yari Film Group Releasing.

Tinseltown Tidbits
Drumline star Zoe Saldana—currently filming Avatar, James Cameron’s first new film since Titanic—is in final negotiations to play Uhura in the upcoming, much-anticipated Star Trek prequel, which will portray Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock before they were commanders of the USS Enterprise. Leonard Nimoy has signed on to do a cameo in the film, slated for Christmas 2008 release…. Edgar Ramirez, Saldana’s costar in Vantage Point, recently wrote, produced and starred in Cyrano Fernandez, a modern Venezuelan retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, which premiered at the AFI Film Festival in November. A huge celeb in his native country, he’s still a rising star here, despite an appearance in The Bourne Ultimatum and Tony Scott’s Domino.
