Dancing with Mario…
Last year Mario López told Estylo of his wish to do a Broadway musical. Well, now his wish has come true. López had been in negotiation with the producers of the new Broadway revival of the Tony-winning musical, A Chorus Line, to star as Zach, the director auditioning the hopeful dancers. The E! Channel reported that López has already been offered the role, while his reps would only admit to being “in talks” with the producers. As we went to press, it was confirmed that López will indeed be starring in the musical starting in April and going until September.
Serving up comedy
My Name Is Earl creator/executive producer Greg Garcia found a unique way to keep busy and gain inspiration for his show during the three-month Writers Guild strike. He spent the month of January working as a cashier and janitor in a fast-food restaurant. “This wound up as a really positive thing,” Garcia told The Hollywood Reporter. “The place was unbelievably clean. The people whom I worked with were great. And the work itself was fun. Really. I worked hard—cashiering, cleaning the bathrooms. A few days in, they liked me so much they asked me to join their management team.” Wonder if this means we’ll be seeing Earl Hickey asking “Fries with that?” on an upcoming episode.
Doña to Follow Zorro’s Footsteps
Doña Bárbara, a Latin American literary classic, is pegged to be the next major global telenovela series from Sony Pictures Television and the Spanish-language Telemundo network. The two partners have committed to 120 high-definition episodes, obviously hopeful of repeating the success they achieved with their previous collaboration on Zorro: La Espada y la Rosa, which is now one of the network’s most successful original novelas. In fact, it was the network’s highest-rated series of last year. “This is a real classic story with love triangles, good and evil, lots of passion and forbidden love,” a Sony rep said of the story that’s based on a 1929 novel by Venezuelan author Rómulo Gallegos. “We wanted to do another epic, a classic,” the rep continued. “When you read the book, you can visualize the spectacular countryside. You have jungles and ranches and cowboys and beautiful, mysterious women.” No stars or broadcast dates have yet been announced for the series.
